In a perfect world, all youth sports organizations would have enough money to provide new equipment for all members of the team, and pay for trips and competitions in other cities. However, we don't live in a perfect world, which is why all cheerleading squads must engage in some fundraising activities in order to continue cheering.

Cheerleading fundraising has come a long way since car washes and bake sales, though those are still two perfectly decent ways of making a little extra money for a cheerleading squad. However, these days many squads are becoming a little more creative with their cheerleading fundraising ideas by receiving some assistance from friendly neighborhood local business owners.

Some squads like to hold an annual fashion show, with clothing donated from local stores and raffled off at the end of the show. By charging a dollar for entrance, as well as selling baked goods and beverages, a cheerleading squad can raise hundreds of dollars in an afternoon and have fun doing it!

Another great cheerleading fundraising idea is to hold a bottle drive. Bottle drives make the most money when they are held after a long weekend like Memorial Day. A week before the drive, send out flyers to residents in the area informing them when the cheerleaders will be coming by to pick up the bottles. It's best to hold the bottle drive on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, as that's when most people are home. In lieu of bottles, people can also give small cash donations.

Here Comes the Pudding!

When it comes to cheerleading fundraising, sometimes the craziest ideas are the best ones because they get people's attention. While baseball teams are famous for their dunk tanks and pie tosses, some cheerleading squads like to hold pudding slings. For a small cash donation, people can throw handfuls of chocolate, butterscotch, vanilla, or pistachio pudding at their favorite (or least favorite member) of the cheerleading squad. This fundraising activity works well in conjunction another larger-scale activity like a spring Carnival or cash wash.

Spirit Stars and Balloons

Many cheerleading squads like to hold fundraising activities that get everyone in the school involved. One easy and inexpensive fundraising activity is to make a large number of stars from construction paper in the school's colors. Decorate the stars with glitter or stickers for added flair, and sell the stars for one or two dollars each to decorate the gym before a big game. When a person buys a star, they can write their name on it as a display of their school spirit.

Here's another fun and easy high school cheerleading fundraising activity that gets everyone involved called "Balloon Tag". This activity requires a large number of balloons inflated with helium so that they float. The cheerleaders set up a table in a common area and sell the balloons for one dollar each. When a person buys a balloon they tag it to someone, and that person must wear the balloon tied to their clothes for the remainder of the day. If they want, they can pay a dollar to tag the balloon to someone else. Don't forget to include the teachers on this one!

How to Add a Silent Auction to Your Next Fundraiser for Fun and Profits

Silent auctions are often combined with other fundraising events, such as craft fairs, choir and band concerts, and banquets. Anytime a large group of people is together at an event, indoors or out, you can probably have a silent auction and raise money for your organization or charity.

Silent auctions are so named because there is not a live auctioneer holding the auction. Instead, the items to be auctioned are on display with a bid sheet for each item. The auction-goers bid by writing their bid amount on paper. At the end of the auction, all the bid sheets are collected and the high bidder pays for the auction item.

The opening and minimum bids are usually predetermined. Bidding usually starts a one half the retail price of the item. It is a good idea to set minimum bidding increments so that people don't just raise their bids by five cents each time. The higher the dollar value of the item the higher the bidding increment should be. For example, if you are auctioning a pair of airline tickets worth $500 you would start the bidding at $250 with bidding increments set at $10.00. If you have a gift certificate for $40.00 to a hair salon you would start the bidding at $20.00 with a $1.00 increment.

Most of the time the items for the silent auction are donated by members of your organization or by businesses. When you auction donated items your organization will get to keep one hundred percent of the money the item sells for. You can also use donations of money and buy items for the silent auction but you have to make sure you will still make a profit if you buy items. Gift certificates from local businesses are the most popular items for silent auctions. Businesses benefit by getting a tax write-off and the potential for a new customer when they donate to your auction.

You can hold a silent auction with lots of items for bidding or you can even have a silent auction when you have only one item to auction. Depending on your event, the aforementioned airline tickets could be used by themselves for a silent auction.

You can also be creative with your auctions and have a theme. For example you can create themed gift baskets with the items you receive. Baskets can be filled with an assortment of coordinating items. Some possibilities for themes are chocolate lovers, coffee and tea lovers, bath and body, gardening, candles, and sports. Of course, this will require more work from your volunteers in preparing the auction.

Some things to remember when holding a silent auction are:

Make sure your items are displayed attractively and that people have enough room to gather around your display tables.

Have volunteers on hand to help bidders and keep an eye on the items to prevent theft (sadly, it does occur sometimes).

If you have gift certificates as auction items make sure the expiration date gives the buyer a reasonable time to use the certificate.

Announce the end of the bidding and let people have one more chance to bid.

When the bidding is over leave yourself enough time to collect the bids, the money and hand out the items. People are usually ready to leave at the end of an event and do not want to wait around for an hour to receive their item.

Always remember to thank your donors and give them a receipt for tax purposes.

Need some new fundraising ideas? When your organization or group needs to raise money for a trip or project, there is nothing wrong with another bake sale. Do something a little different, though, and you may get more volunteers for the event. You might also get more media exposure, meaning more people will participate, which means more money raised. Why not try one of the following ideas.

Mobile rummage sale. Having a rummage sale is a common fundraising idea, but how about a mobile rummage sale? It requires collecting donations of things to sell, and the cooperation of someone with a pick up truck. Sort the things as neatly as possible in the back of the truck, then go door-to-door, explaining to the residents that you are raising money for your cause, and asking them to take a look at your sale. Maybe they'll also want to donate things to sell. Take the sale to the beach or other busy places too.

Dog wash. A car wash is one of the most common fundraising ideas out there, but a dog wash is less common. Find a place where many people walk their dogs. A brush, dog shampoo, and a source of water are all you need. You could also sell dog toys, dog snacks and other pet-related things for even more profit.

Business clean-up. Many businesses need to have the area around them cleaned up. Restaurants might have trash around the edges of their parking lots, some businesses may need their signs washed, and others could need their sidewalks and lots swept. A crew of young people could clean up a property in an hour for a set fee, and the business could write off the contribution on their taxes.

Online donor recognition. When you collect donations for a project or regular event, you can promise donors that they'll be recognized on your group's official website. They get a bit of internet immortality as one of the people that made your event, trip or project possible. It is common that donors get their names put on a plaque, but the website is accessible to all their friends anywhere in the world, so they can show them how they helped.

Treasure hunt. This could be a big event, even an annual one if your organization needs a regular fundraising event. The basic idea: Rope off an area of a beach, bury silver bars and coins in the sand, and let people hunt for them for an entry fee. Let's say you bury 4 quarter-ounce gold coins, 20 one-ounce silver bars, 1000 various foreign coins (some coin shops sell these for ten cents each), 500 dimes and 2000 pennies. At today's prices it would cost you about $1,000, which you might first raise through donations. With 3524 coins, almost everyone would find something. 300 people paying $10 each would net your group $2,000, plus you could sell hotdogs and drinks during the event.

Except for the last one, these are all relatively cheap events to plan. Tell the papers about your plans, of course. The more unusual fundraising ideas are more likely to get some free press coverage.

Deciding when to start the fundraiser is super important. It is always known that the first group to go into an office or neighborhood to ask for orders in fundraising has higher chances of success than the following groups. However, timing is not the #1 reason why groups have successful fundraisers. As mentioned on the prior, both groups started at the same time but results (profits) were very different. Secret # 4- Person in Charge Of Fundraiser is Critical!
